Portability is (1) The ability to transfer data from one system to another without being required to recreate or reenter data descriptions or to modify significantly the application being transported.
(2) The ability of software or of a system to run on more than one type or size of computer under more than one operating system. Note: An application is portable across a class of environments to the degree that the effort required to transport and adapt it to a new environment in the class is less than the effort of redevelopment.
